Back to the knitting porn… last night's knitting, attempted with Mr. FP sitting on my lap, was a disaster – I didn't realize I'd stopped in the middle of a round the last time, and got all the way through the next before I realized and had to take it all back out again. So, reading it is.

Mason-Dixon Knitting by Kay Gardiner and Ann Shayne I've been waiting for this book anxiously ever since reading the Booklist review and adding the blog ( http://www.masondixonknitting.com ) to my reading list. It was worth the wait! Ann and Kay are very funny, and their focus is on things a) that you will actually be able to use, like dishclothes, rugs, and blankets and b) that will look cool without you having to work really hard at it. That is, unlike the last knitting porn book, I would not be afraid to tackle any of the projects in this book, at least from a technical skills point of view. (I really don't see myself taking on a queen-sized blanket any time soon.) If you're not comfortable reading a knitting pattern yet, I'd read Stitch 'n' Bitch or a similar introduction first. But if you're like me, comfy with baby hats but still scared of sweaters, this looks like the perfect book. Linen hand towels, log cabin blankets (including the fabulous Joseph's Blankie of Many Colors), the Heartbreakingly Cute Baby Kimono… plus random rules scattered throughout, and a list of 10 knitting mistakes you will make. This is one I plan to save up my pennies for, and have not taken back to the library more than a week after gobbling it up.
